World Leukemia Day 2026: IMPACT-AML advancing research for patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Every September, Blood Cancer Awareness Month turns the spotlight on blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. It is a moment to spread knowledge of early warning signs, push for timely diagnosis, and stand alongside the millions of people worldwide living with these diseases.
At the heart of this global campaign is World Leukemia Day, observed on 4 September, when patient organizations, healthcare professionals, researchers, and advocates unite to increase public understanding of leukemia and stress the importance of early recognition and diagnosis. The international awareness campaign shares practical information about leukemia symptoms and urges people not to delay in seeking medical advice when something seems wrong.
The EU project IMPACT-AML stands behind this campaign. Funded by Horizon Europe, the project works to improve outcomes for patients with relapsed or refractory Acute Myeloid Leukemia (R/R AML), one of the most aggressive blood cancers and among the hardest to treat, through STREAM, a pioneering European framework that connects clinicians, researchers, and patients across countries to generate robust evidence and accelerate innovation in AML care. This approach helps build the evidence needed to shape future standards of care and promote more equitable access to treatment across Europe.
That is why, to mark the day, IMPACT-AML is amplifying the work of its external partner, the Acute Leukemia Advocates Network (ALAN), an international network of patient organizations dedicated to acute leukemias.
ALAN has launched a series of educational videos available through the Acute Leuk YouTube Channel, helping patients and the public better understand the signs and symptoms of acute leukemia.
A series of posts dedicated to symptom awareness is available at https://www.youtube.com/@AcuteLeuk

As we mark World Leukemia Day on 4 September and Blood Cancer Awareness Month throughout September, IMPACT-AML reinforces the message that awareness, research, and collaboration must go hand in hand. By increasing understanding of leukemia and supporting innovative initiatives such as IMPACT-AML, we can help accelerate progress toward better treatments and improved outcomes for patients worldwide.
